Telehealth - The New Frontier

Presented By: DRI's Life, Health and Disability Committee

Telehealth represents an intersection of the worlds of healthcare providers, insurance, technology, data privacy, governmental regulation and consumer usage. As a result, telemedicine has high potential for risk, but is not without reward. Risks inherent to telehealth include potential for unauthorized practice of medicine, less than optimal patient care and safety, privacy data breach, and lack of compliance with state or federal guidelines leading to fines or worse. Benefits of telehealth include greater access to healthcare, for rural consumers in particular; minimizing costly and unnecessary emergency room visits; and more timely and efficient care. In this new normal arising during the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth is particularly well suited for providing quicker and safer access to providers without unnecessary exposure to others. This presentation is intended to raise awareness of the issues recognizing the ever-changing landscape and to present best case strategies for minimizing risk and maximizing benefits.
