This presentation will provide an update on two areas of continued interest for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): human health risk assessment, and remedy design and implementation at hydrogeologically-challenging sites. Tools and references to guide the establishment of science-based site-specific screening levels for PFAS will be discussed. Then speakers will present the design and implementation of an innovative, fully passive water treatment remedy for upwelling groundwater channels, which has consistently removed over 99% of target PFAS from influent water.

Geosyntec Consultants

Dr. Jason Conder has more than 15 years of consulting experience in environmental toxicology, contaminated sediment assessment and management, ecological and human health risk assessment, bioaccumulation and bioavailability of environmental contaminants, environmental chemistry, environmental monitoring technology, ecology, and statistics. He has provided technical expertise in ecological risk assessment and environmental toxicology to multinational clients addressing environmental liability and risk issues associated with contaminated sites, including several large, multi-stakeholder contaminated sediment sites in North America, Europe and Asia. In addition, Dr. Conder focuses on evaluations of emerging chemicals of concern such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS, such as PFOA and PFOS). He has published more than 20 peer reviewed articles in environmental toxicology and chemistry, presented technical work at numerous international scientific conferences, and has served on and co-chaired several technical workshops.

Chris guides clients with a broad array of remediation technologies, from feasibility through design, construction management, and operations. Many of his projects are large multidisciplinary efforts requiring a critical path schedule and substantial coordination of private, regulatory, and public stakeholders. One of his recent accomplishments is a passive, gravity-powered flow-through cell design that is removing over 99% of PFAS from highly impacted streams at a manufacturing facility. Chris also provides environmental litigation support for his clients, including technical support to recover claims compensation from the client's insurance carrier related to environmental remediation expenditures. He has also performed environmental liability valuation estimates for industrial clients providing estimates of probability and cost for appropriate environmental remediation scenarios.

Matt Vanderkooy Related Seminars and Products

Geosyntec Consultants

Matt is focused on client environmental contamination challenges, particularly for PFAS. He helps clients investigate PFAS sources, environmental distribution, exposure to human and ecological receptors, and fate and transport in multiple environmental media including air, surface water, stormwater, groundwater, soil, sediment, wastewater, biosolids, fish, and vegetation. Matt translates investigative findings into insights, strategies, plans, and actions for remediation. Matt has implemented remedies for PFAS in surface water, stormwater and groundwater. A proven innovator, Matt develops new ways for clients and the industry to assess and remediate contaminated sites. For instance, Matt was part of a diverse technical team that furthered PFAS knowledge, specifically regarding analytical challenges involving novel PFAS. These insights have led to changes in how certain PFAS analytes are reported interpreted and now remediated.
